Amish Harvest
The reporter approached me early on while working on this story. The farmer refused to be photographed, but said that I could spend the day shucking corn and making drawings. I came back and transferred my drawings to scratchboard and added a scratchboard infographic explaining the harvesting technique. I also hand lettered the headline to make this a complete package.
Art smart
This page was created from a wire story on the creative development of children. I created the chart at the bottom of the page out of the middle of the story. The chart shows the level of creative development at different ages e.g. at 16 months, a child should be eating clay. I organized this information into a grid and compared it with a child's progression to walking.
Clearing the air
Allergens in the home can be the cause of many health problems.
The causes of household air pollution were originally tacked on to the end of the story. I decided to pull that information out to make a graphic.
I built the house by scanning in pieces of lumber, dirt and found objects and arranging them in Photoshop. The explainer boxes offer ways to clear the air.
Undoing the Dew
There is an urban legend among middle school students that Mountain Dew has contraceptive properties because of it's caffeine level. The reporter confirmed this belief in local students and found a girl who became pregnant after the Mountain Dew method failed her.

The Business Monday section focused on helping workers at the workplace.
Sometimes it seems that visual journalism begins and ends on the section cover. I worked hard to bring visual interest and breakout information inside Business Monday with photographs, illustrations and graphics.
